Dear Editor:
The events that occured April 17th
regarding former Iranian ambassador
Hoveyda 's appearance at CSU, Fresno
should be reflected upon. Many Iranian
students demonstrated against Hoveyda. It is true . that no one should
be deprived of his/her opportunity
to speak freely. However, those in
charge Df arranging Hoveyda's ap_pearance should have been aware of the
controversy'. surrounding him. Fereydoun Hoveyda was the Iranian ambassador to the U.N. for thirteen years
and was a strong supporter of the Shah .
To the Iranian people the Shah is what
Hitler is to the Jews and what the
Imperial Wizard of the KKK is to the
Blacks.

Dear Edi.tor:
It is very important to thank those in the
Chicano community who give to nuestra

such a fine newspaper.
In the ten years that I have been a

the present editor and past editors
such as Richard Aguirre and Ricardo Pimentel, La Voz has become a well-produced, significant campus publication
that frequently is head over · heels
above regular editions of the Daily
Collegian or Insight. •
The atrocities that the Shah got away
with are inexcusable in the eyes of the
Iranian people and should be in the eyes
of any human being. To have a past servant of the Shah whose abuse of power
was responsible for the torture, . suffering, and death fo the family and
friends of many Iranian students come
to speak is a slap in the face to the
Iranian students. The Iranian students
should not be blamed for expressing ·
their displeasure, for Hoveyda 's appearance was emotionally overwhelming. It would seem apparenf from last
semester's discussion on the hostage ·
issue, which turned out to be totally
. anti-lranian·and the crowd's reacton to
the Iranian student demonstration
against Hoveyda that shouting down
·and throwing objects at a speaker are
white, middle ·class values held in
high esteem. Would have Hoveyda 's speech been
a good educational opportunity to make
a moral decision regarding the Shah's
regime? Was it right to deny the Iranian
students the equal time which they requested? It is unfortunate that some students were denied the opportunity to
hear the speaker they came to hear.

Cinco de Mayo is a national holdiay
in Mexico and most Chicanos in this
country also consider it a day to celebrate. The victory preserved national
independence, liberty and pride-things
we all value.
the Semana de La Raza our· own "Chicano Vintage Days," it would be wise for
us to check the progress of the movement and ask ourselves if we are doing
all we can to help bring justice to all
Chicanos. It seems a complaceny has
swept over Chicanos on this campus.
La Causa means little to so many.
Too manv Chicanos today are content
with the status quo, satisfied with
that little place the dominant majority
has issued.
And, this complacency
has begun to hurt others.
Too many you_ng people don't know or
care about the sacrifice, blood and tears
shed by older brothers for the movement. Too many seem content to just
pass the time eating and drinking.
Needless to say we have to start caring.

Semana De La Raza
With a deep spirit of pride in our heri-
. we here at CSUF are enjoying
tage, most of us will joyfuly celebrate
Cinro de Mayo this week. It is good that
we do this, but we should not overlook
the significance of the event while
we are enjoying ourselves.
On the fifth of May in 1862, troops
loyal to President Benito Juarez repelled
a French attack on the city of Puebla.
"'1exico ~ined free, and the battle
marked the spirit of self-determination
that has characterized the Mexicano.
Cinco de Mayo is a national holdiay
in Mexico and most Chicanos in this
country also consider it a day to celebrate. The victory preserved national
independence, liberty and pride-things
we all value.
the Semana de La Raza our· own "Chicano Vintage Days," it would be wise for
us to check the progress of the movement and ask ourselves if we are doing
all we can to help bring justice to all
Chicanos. It seems a complaceny has
swept over Chicanos on this campus.
La Causa means little to so many.
Too manv Chicanos today are content
with the status quo, satisfied with
that little place the dominant majority
has issued.
And, this complacency
has begun to hurt others.
Too many you_ng people don't know or
care about the sacrifice, blood and tears
shed by older brothers for the movement. Too many seem content to just
pass the time eating and drinking.
Needless to say we have to start caring.

Semana De La Raza
With a deep spirit of pride in our heri-
. we here at CSUF are enjoying
tage, most of us will joyfuly celebrate
Cinro de Mayo this week. It is good that
we do this, but we should not overlook
the significance of the event while
we are enjoying ourselves.
On the fifth of May in 1862, troops
loyal to President Benito Juarez repelled
a French attack on the city of Puebla.
"'1exico ~ined free, and the battle
marked the spirit of self-determination
that has characterized the Mexicano.
Cinco de Mayo is a national holdiay
in Mexico and most Chicanos in this
country also consider it a day to celebrate. The victory preserved national
independence, liberty and pride-things
we all value.
the Semana de La Raza our· own "Chicano Vintage Days," it would be wise for
us to check the progress of the movement and ask ourselves if we are doing
all we can to help bring justice to all
Chicanos. It seems a complaceny has
swept over Chicanos on this campus.
La Causa means little to so many.
Too manv Chicanos today are content
with the status quo, satisfied with
that little place the dominant majority
has issued.
And, this complacency
has begun to hurt others.
Too many you_ng people don't know or
care about the sacrifice, blood and tears
shed by older brothers for the movement. Too many seem content to just
pass the time eating and drinking.
Needless to say we have to start caring.
