NATIONAL HOLIDAY FOR
DR. ffiARTIN LUTHER KING
Stevie Wonder
Internationally acclaimed singer
Stevie Wonder has called for a
mass rally January 15, the birthday
of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr., in Washington, D.C., to
demand a national holiday. Stevie
states, "It is believed that for a
man to lay down his life for the
love of others is the supreme
sacrifice. Jesus Christ by his own
example showed us that there is no
greater love. For nearly 2,000
years we have been striving to
have the strength to follow that
example. Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. was a man who had that
strength. He showed us, nonviolently,
a better way of life, a
way of mutual respect, helping us
to avoid a much more bitter confrontation
and inevitable bloodshed.
We still have a long road to
travel until we reach the world
that was his dream. We in the U.S.
must not forget either his supreme
sacrifice or that dream."

QUOTE
OF THE ffiONTH
Richard Pryor, who is
recuperating from a serious burn
injury, was asked during a recent
interview why he spoke of God so
often now. He replied, "I've
always believed in God, but I
didn't talk about it. You might
not have seen me in the church
hollering and screaming, but I've
always known that there is a Great
La,w of the Universe, and it connects
to us and we're part of it. As
for demons, man I can stomp a
demon to death now. Stomp 'em
and get 'em out of my life." 15

STUDY FINDS ffiAJORITY OF POOR
BLACKS NOT ON WELFARE
Contrary to popular stereotypes, more than half of all poor, Black
households do not receive general welfare assistance or aid for dependent
children, and the great majority of unemployed Blacks do not draw
jobless benefits, according to a National Urban League study.
The study also found that only slightly more than half of all Black
household heads who receive welfare are covered by Medicaid, although
the public commonly assumes that all welfare recipients automatically
qualify for the health benefits.
Robert B. Hill, National Urban League research director, said that the
study refutes claims by many social scientists and government policy
makers that poverty has been virtually abolished in the United States
because of the ease with which the sick, hungry and jobless can obtain
public assistance.
"They're making the erroneous assumption that a large proportion of
the income-support programs are reaching the poor, and that those
receiving them are somehow pushed above the poverty level."
He said that 58 percent of all Black households with incomes below
$6,000 a year receive benefits from only one or two of the seven major
income programs for the poor.
Hill blamed the programs' failure to reach many needy people on the
"insensitive, punitive and conflicting" eligibility requirements and other
administrative practices.
The Urban League study, "The Myth of Income Cushions for
Blacks," surveyed 3,000 Black households in cities, suburbs and rural
localities across the nation. Among the findings:
---70 percent of all unemployed Blacks never receive any jobless benefits.
---56 percent of Black households with incomes below $6,000 a year do
not receive general assistance or aid to families with dependent
children.
---51 percent of all Black household heads on welfare say they are
covered by Medicaid.
---65 percent of all Black households receive benefits from only one or
18 none of the seven major income programs for the poor.

TIPS ON HOW TO AVOID CANCER
Worried about cancer and wondering what you can do to avoid it? Dr.
Michael B. Shimkin, former cancer researcher at the National Cancer Institute,
and now at the University of California at San Diego offers the
following advice: '
1. Do n~t smoke tobacco or substitutes. Cigarette smoking may be responsible
for as much as 50 percent of the cancer in males according
to some experts, and a smaller, but significant perc;ntage in
women. Smoking marijuana may also cause cancer.
2. Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol in excess is believed to promote
tumor formation.
3. Eat sparingly a "prudent" diet. Too great a calorie intake and
an excessive fat consumption have been associated with higher
incidence of some cancers.
4. Avoid unnecessary X-rays. Shimkin emphasized the word "unnecessary.''
5. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Sun bathing has been linked to an
increased rate of skin cancer.
6. A void inappropriate drug intake. Some medications are suspected
of being carcinogenic.
7. In the work place, avoid or minimize contact with irritants.
8. At work, avoid or minimize swallowing foreign substances.
9. A void or minimize breathing foreign materials.
IO. Use appropriate protective measures and devices while working.

SALUTE FOR COURAGE-Marquis Henderson of Compton (L) and
Frank Johnson, Jr. (R) of Los Angeles, were recently honored at a luncheon
for their heroic rescue of Robert Sneary (C) of Riverside, from his
overturned vehicle just before it became engulfed in flames.
Sneary, a gasoline transport driver for Exxon, was involved in an accident
on the Golden State Freeway near the Pasadena Freeway. The
cargo of gasoline ignited when the truck overturned, and Sneary was not
able to get out of the vehicle. Johnson and Henderson were traveling in
the opposite lanes of the freeway from the accident. After stopping, due
to the flames blocking their way, they noticed Sneary trying to get out of
his truck. Both men jumped the center-divider fence, climbed on top of
the overturned truck and opened the door in order for Sneary to climb
from the cab.
Stuart Pearman, Exxon Region Manager from Dallas, Texas, presented
each man with a check and a plaque for their act of bravery at a luncheon
24 at the University Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

ALL-BLACK CALIFORNIA SETTLEffiENT
CELEBRATES FOURTH ANNIVERSARY
The state Dept. of Parks and
Recreation sponsored the fourth
anniversary of the dedication of
the Colonel Allensworth State
Historic Park recently in the park
in southwestern Tulare County.
The celebration included talks
on the history of Allensworth, introduction
of Allensworth
pioneers, music and other entertainment.
Allensworth was founded in
1908 as an all-Black settlement by
Col. Allen Allensworth, who had
been the highest-ranking Black in
the Army, and by a retired Army
chaplain, William A. Payne.
The community prospered and
in 1914 became a judicial district
with the state's first Black justice
of the peace, William H. Dotson,
and first Black constable, Oscar
Overr.
However, Allensworth died in
1914. Later, the area suffered
from a lack of drinking and
irrigation water--despite a lengthy
r.ourt battle aimed at forcing the
developers to follow through on a
promise of sufficient irrigation
water--and most of the residents
moved to other parts of the state.
The state park has a visitor center
and a restoration is nearly
completed on the original
schoolhouse and the colonel's
home. Restoration of a drug store,
general store and post office are
scheduled to start soon.

STILL THE CHAMP-Mrs. Larry Holmes (C) smiles at an after-fight
celebration in Las Vegas, as she is positioned on the left by her famous
husband and on the right by the Holmes/ Ali promoter, Don King.
Holmes scored a record-setting eight straight knockouts when Ali failed

ALI: ffiORE
THAN ABOXER
When historians write about Muhammad Ali, they will write that he
was one of the best heavyweight boxing champions of all times. He will
be ranked in the company of Jack Johnson, Joe Lewis, Rocky Marciano,
Jack Dempsey and other great heavyweights.
But more important to Black people, what made Muhammad Ali
perhaps the most widely known man in the world was what he did outside
the ring.
Ali was the first Black athlete to fight the white man's system head-on
and make it stick when he refused on his Islamic religious belief to be
drafted into the army and later won a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court
victory. His refusal to fight in the Vietnam war cost him his title and untold
millions, but it made him a hero beyond athletics to dark-skinned
people around the world.
Historians, who write the truth, will respect how Muhammad Ali
stood up for Black peoples' rights, how he stood by his religious beliefs
and how he was revered for his generosity and kindness in the Far East
Africa, and other places where skins are not white. They will also writ~
that Muhammad Ali, by example, persuaded generations of Black and
White youths that clean living is the best way of life.
EDUCATION THROUGH SPORTS
b,Y Bobb,Y fficDonold
Armed with a tax exemption
status; a theme "Education
through Sports," Twelve Com
mandments, and the Community
of Watts, Joe Clarke set out in
1970 to help ballplayers "utilize
their tools" (basketball talent) to
get an education.
The Watts Magicians were
formed in 1970 with the purpose of
giving young men a worthwhile
experience-an opportunity to
improve their talents, increase
their educational skills, plus
provide an exposure to college
basketball coaches which would
enable them to get a college
education.
Education through sports is Joe
Clarke's theme and the twelve
commandments is his game plan.
The commandments are patience,
competitiveness, discipline, basics,
awareness, responsibility, consistency,
control, concentration, fundamentals
and communications.
"What we try to impress on our
kids is that basketball is only a
means to an end-and that the end
is life itself. We ask them
(Magician players) to study at
least an hour a day, Monday
through Thursday; we ask them to
be in bed by 10 o'clock; we ask
them to be up by 6 a.m. to do
some exercises to get the body
stimulated so they don't sleep in
class."
A few of the success stories of
the Watts Magicians are NBA
players Robert Smith (Univ.
Nevada Las Vegas and New Jersey
Nets), David Greenwood (UCLA
and Chicago Bulls), Roy
Hamilton (UCLA and Detroit
Pistons), James Hardy (USF and
Utah Jazz) and Reggie Theus
(Univ. Nevada and Chicago
Bulls). Not to mention 75 to 80
former Magicians that are still
playing major college basketball.
Clarke has three sons, holds
down a full time job at Intercraft
Industries, is a member of the
Soulville Foundation, can be
found at most basketball games
from high school to pro's, and has
kept this routine for 10 years. In
fact, he probably should add a
new commandment-sacrifice. He
has that one down pat.
Joe Clarke helps the youth of
today get what's coming to them
in a positive way through
education and sports. 37

NORm NIXON-LAKER STAR

Norm Nixon, 25, is the
playmaking guard of the 1980
NBA World Champion Los
Angeles Lakers.
A mathematics major at Duquesne
University in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, Norman has also attended
real estate school since
moving to Los Angeles. His expertise
in both fields paid off recently
as he acquired an exceptionally
nice piece of property in the
View Park section of Los Angeles.
"Because I went through
something like mathematics which
is an extremely difficult major,
and being aggressive, I'm able to
handle all my own business .... I'm
doing some things now that will
put me in a position where
working for somebody else might
not be mandatory," Norman explains
his post basketball career
plans.
In addition to making real
estate investments, the Laker star
branched into the media this
summer with his "Norm Nixon
Sports Show," a five-minute interview
and information program
on the popular KDAY radio
station. Some of his guests included
Reggie Jackson, Don
Baylor, and Lake Coach Paul
Westhead.
Norman, a 1980 recipient of the
Youth Achievers Award, has conducted
summer basketball day
camps for boys at Beverly Hills
High School and in Santa Maria,
California.
Despite all this activity, for
Norm Nixon basketball is still the
top priority. His performance in
exhibition games prior to the
1980-81 NBA season convinced
fans that as one of the main
pistons in the Lakers' fast-break
machine. He has recovered fully
from the operation he underwent
during the off-season to repair
torn ligaments in the finger of his
left hand which he sustained in the
final game of the championship
series against Philadelphia.
As optimistic about the Lakers'
chance to repeat their championship
as he was about the
rehabilitation of his left hand,
Norm Nixon says confidently; "If
we can go and play like we did this
year. ...and if we stay injury free,
we'll be back in the running.... I
think if we play like we played
(last season), nobody will beat us
again!" 39
LA TOYA JACKSON...
'ON ffiYOWN'
by Potricio Bornes
Twenty-four year old La Toya Jackson is
the fifth born to the family of the multitalented
musical geniuses we first knew as
the " Jackson Five."Although her brothers
have given us more than two decades of
explosive sounds, the attractive Gemini
tells us that it wasn't until five years ago
that she was, so to speak, " bitten by the
show business bug." Just recently,
La Toya recorded her first album--entitled
simply "La Toya Jackson." It is produced
by her brother, Michael Jackson. Here,
La Toya discusses freely with "Grapevine"
staff her career ambitions and shares with
its readers her bitter-sweet struggle for
self-recognition.
"What I really want," says
LaToya, "is for people to accept
me and my music because they like
it and not because I'm a
Jackson."
Naturally gentle in tone and
mannerism, LaToya speaks softly
but very affixed. "When we cut
the album, I didn't want to call it
LaToya Jackson, I just wanted to
call it LaToya. I needed the
security," she adds, "of knowing
I could do this on my own....if I
fail let it be because LaToya failed
and if I succeed, let it be on my
ability."
Since release of her debut
album, the brown-eyed beauty is a
bit more relaxed. Her current hit
singles "If You Feel the Funk,"
and "Night Time Lover" are
moving up rapidly on the charts
and LaToya feels that it is
definitely her inner soul that
people are adhering to.
Highly attractive with soft
angelic features, it's hard to
believe that no one gentleman has
yet captured her heart.
"But if there were a special
guy," La Toya affirms, "he would
have to be someone that I can gain
from mentally.'' She further tells
us, "I'm hungry for knowledge ...
there is so much to be learned, I
like someone that inspires me and
who I can inspire in return."
LaToya's thirst for knowledge
allows for more of her personality
to surface. She has total confidence
in herself and her abilities.
Her ultimate, she concedes, is to
become a screen actress.
But viewing the lovely enchantress
on the big screen may not be
in the immediate future. For the
moment, she's absorbed in the
thought of making her album a
success. As with all recording artists,
LaToya dreams of her first
gold album.
She remains positive that this
will happen. Extensive preparation,
includiPg promotional tours
and several television appearances,
are all designed to give her an
added boost. She has already appeared
on major telecasts including
"Soul Train," "Solid Gold,"
"Midnight Special" and "American
Bandstand.''
There are already plans for her 41
~a Toya at a party celebrating her new album release at the Candy Store
m Hollywood. (L to R) Family members Tito, Jackie, Grandmother Jackson,
La Toya, father Joe Jackson, Janet, Marlon and Randy.

second album. She reveals to us "l
think this time l'11 do it without
any help from the Jacksons. lt was
sort of hard the first time," she
explains, "because Michael and l
wrote "Night Time Lover" together.
They would always say .. .'by
LaToya Jackson, produced by Michael
Jackson' and people would
immediately link the two."
LaToya is proud of her family
and loves being a Jackson; but to
have her own claim to fame is
most important to her. She knows
that in the beginning it may be difficult
but she's confident that she
will triumph. Her music is
exhiliarating and the response the
singer feels is real.
LaToya is a sensational star on
her way, most definitely On Her
Own.

"Love Lives Forever," an
album by the late Minnie Riperton,
was completed this summer.
It's unique because the process
used had never been tried before.
It was produced by Dick Rudolph,
her husband, who's an accomplished
musician and songwriter
with an old friend, Johnny Pate'.
who also has been in music many
years.
"The songs had been recorded
previously by Minnie, and she
wanted to re-do them a certain
way to be included on her new
albums," Rudolph states. "We
saw there wasn't going to be time
to recut them so Minnie and I
talked about what we wanted to
do. We knew we were definitely
going to do it. Capitol wanted this

DONNA
WASHINGTON
Raised on gospel, rooted in soul
and very much a daughter of contemporary
popular music, Do~na
Washington makes her record1_ng
debut on Capitol Records with
"For the Sake of Love." With a
sophistication that belies her 21
years, the graceful vocalist proves
herself equally adept at ballads
and highly flavored tunes.
Produced by Capitol's Cecil Hale
and Don Daniels, the selections on
the LP range from Lamont
Dozier' s "Coming in for a Landing"
to Peter Cetera's "If You
Leave Me Now" to Donna's
favorite, the title track writt_en by
Daniels and pianist John Spnnger.
It' s a remarkable debut album
from a remarkable new talent and
all-American woman . w~o~e
passionate involve~ent with hfe is
reflected in her music.
Anyone familiar with
Sylvester's electrifying live or
recorded performances already
knows that a great deal of the wattage
is supplied by his amazing
backup singers, the Two Tons O'
Fun. The Tons--Martha Wash and
Izora Rhodes Armstead--are now
center stage on their brand new
Fantasy / Honey release entitled
" Two Tons O' Fun."
Among the album's many
highlights: "Just Us" and "Earth
Can Be Just Like Heaven," both
co-written by Eric Robinson
(composer of "Dance Disco
Heat"). lzora steps out on the uptempo
"I Got the Feeling," and
"Taking Away Your Space,"
Martha Wash and lzora Armstead
TWO TONS O' FUN
written by Harvey Fuqua and
Sylvester, is a ballad spotlight for
Martha.
It doesn' t take a lot of musical
expertise to figure out that Martha
and lzora have strong gospel
roots. "Our parents are church
people," Izora explains, "so
that's all we've known in our
lives." Both Tons, however, have
also had training in opera and the
classics.
Ms. Wash was born and raised
in San Francisco, the youngest of
nine children. Ms. Armstead,
originally from Galveston, Texas,
has lived in San Francisco since
she was a small child.
JOHNNY "GUITAR" WATSONAPERSISTENT
ffiUSICIAN
by Po.uline Powell
"Love Jones was done intentionally
to reach all audiences that
could play it seven days a week,"
he comments. It was a lazy afternoon
in the comfortable home of
Johnny "Guitar" Watson,
located in a cul-de-sac. His latest
album which has variety has been
climbing the charts around the
country.
The two selections getting the
most attention are a duet done
with Randy Redman and a
comical rap about the telephone
bill. Also included are a spiritual
and country/western with R&B
flavor. All of the selections were
written, arranged, produced and
played by Johnny except the
drums.
His live performances this year
have included the United States,
Europe and the Sidewalk Festival
in Houston, Texas. Having a
family history of closeness,
qualified family members along
with his twelve piece band work
and travel with him.
"My music didn't hit big until I
included my mother," he says.
His mother's picture is on the
cover and voice on the title track
of the album, "A Real Mother for
You." This album and the "Ain't
That a Bitch" album went gold
June 2, l 977. It was the first time
in music history a recording artist
48 had two albums go gold on the
same day. Johnny's present
album, "Booty Ooty" has gone
gold in France. .
The same company who mtroduced
the Beatles and Elton
John, DJM (Dick James Music)
signed Johnny "Guitar" after an
in troduction from a mutual
friend. There hadn' t been any
faith or support shown from other
companies of his abilities.
However, in 1975 his recording
of "Lone Ranger" was a hit which
he attributes to his appearance at
the Sidewalk Festival in Houston.
Other hits in the earlier years include
"There's Been Some Lonely
Lonely Nights" and "Cutting In
On You."
For many years, he made a
living as a showman traveling the
"Chittin Circuit. ... Maybe it's better;
I wasn't a success earlier
because I'd probably be an Oldie
but Goodie--instead I'm current."
Johnny's musical career started
when he won a talent contest in
1954. The prize was a recording
contract with King Records and
he performed Blues at that time.
He has worked with many greats
throughout the years including
B. B. King and Little Richard.
When asked about the
" Guitar" in his name, he explained
when he started singers
always added a handle so he
became Johnny "Guitar" Watson.
Writing at least three songs a
week that relate to everyday life,
teaching himself how to play the
drum are only two examples of his
devotion to music. Another
example is his bedroom which
converts into a music studio at any
given moment.
Johnny feels that only 40 per
cent of his ability has been tapped
and he plans on playing jazz
someday. His other plans and
goals include having a benefit for
children, helping less fortunate
people, and opening up a music
school.
In the future, he plans to start a
record company and his first artist
would be Randy Redman who
sings with him on his present
album. By the virtue of his tenure
in music, Johnny "Guitar" Watson
is definitely a persistent
musician.

GRAPEVINE CAR TIPS:
SAVE GAS AND moNEY
1. Pump your own gas.
2. If you own more than one car, use the more economical one for the
majority of your driving.
3. Plan your driving times and routes to avoid long lights and congested
streets.
4. Never carry extra weight in your trunk or back seat.
5. Avoid long cold engine warm-up periods. Car idling is getting zero
miles per gallon.
6. Travel at moderate speeds. High speeds use more gasoline.
7. Keep your car engine tuned.
8. Keep tires inflated to recommended levels.
9. Join an auto club. Annual dues range from $10 to $58. The money
you save during a year far exceeds its cost. You get 24-hour emergency
road service and other valuable services.

elected to the U.S. House of
Representatives by voters in the
31st District of Los Angeles.
His election victory is gratifying
to millions of Black people
throughout California and the
country who believe that he had
been black-balled when he lost his
re-election bid for the Lt. Governor's
office.
Dymally gained his victory by
capturing a large block of
minority voters in the multi-racial
31st District, which covers a band
of cities from Torrance on the
west to Paramount on the east and
includes Hawthorne, Compton,
Gardena, Lawndale and parts of
Los Angeles and other comm
unities.
Dymally was a teacher of exceptional
children in Los Angeles for
six years before election to the
State Assembly in 1962, and his
constant stream of bills to aid the
state's children and youth showed
that this remained one of his
major concerns during 12 years as
a legislator. He was elected to the
State Senate in 1966, and served as
Chairman of the Democratic
Caucus.
He successfully authored major
legislation to expand the state's
child, youth and adoption services,
speed educational reform,
56 strengthen campaign contribution
regulations, provide more child
care centers and greatly expand
women's rights. He consistently
won ratings as a top legislator by
consumer, environmental, labor,
women's and civil rights groups.
He authored the Equal Rights
Amendment and the 18-Year-Old
Vote Resolution in the legislature.
He has studied at Oxford, and
has his Ph.D. He holds a B.A. in
education from California State
University, Los Angeles, and an
M.A. m government from
California State University,
Sacramento. He serves on the
Board of Directors of Lincoln
Law University, and the University
of West Los Angeles. He was
the original organizer of the
National Conference of Black
Elected Officials.

Stevie Wonder
Internationally acclaimed singer
Stevie Wonder has called for a
mass rally January 15, the birthday
of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr., in Washington, D.C., to
demand a national holiday. Stevie
states, "It is believed that for a
man to lay down his life for the
love of others is the supreme
sacrifice. Jesus Christ by his own
example showed us that there is no
greater love. For nearly 2,000
years we have been striving to
have the strength to follow that
example. Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. was a man who had that
strength. He showed us, nonviolently,
a better way of life, a
way of mutual respect, helping us
to avoid a much more bitter confrontation
and inevitable bloodshed.
We still have a long road to
travel until we reach the world
that was his dream. We in the U.S.
must not forget either his supreme
sacrifice or that dream."

QUOTE
OF THE ffiONTH
Richard Pryor, who is
recuperating from a serious burn

interview why he spoke of God so
often now. He replied, "I've
always believed in God, but I
didn't talk about it. You might
not have seen me in the church
hollering and screaming, but I've
always known that there is a Great

STUDY FINDS ffiAJORITY OF POOR
BLACKS NOT ON WELFARE
Contrary to popular stereotypes, more than half of all poor, Black
households do not receive general welfare assistance or aid for dependent
children, and the great majority of unemployed Blacks do not draw
jobless benefits, according to a National Urban League study.
The study also found that only slightly more than half of all Black
household heads who receive welfare are covered by Medicaid, although
the public commonly assumes that all welfare recipients automatically
qualify for the health benefits.
Robert B. Hill, National Urban League research director, said that the
study refutes claims by many social scientists and government policy
makers that poverty has been virtually abolished in the United States
because of the ease with which the sick, hungry and jobless can obtain
public assistance.
"They're making the erroneous assumption that a large proportion of
the income-support programs are reaching the poor, and that those
receiving them are somehow pushed above the poverty level."
He said that 58 percent of all Black households with incomes below
$6,000 a year receive benefits from only one or two of the seven major
income programs for the poor.
Hill blamed the programs' failure to reach many needy people on the
"insensitive, punitive and conflicting" eligibility requirements and other
administrative practices.
The Urban League study, "The Myth of Income Cushions for
Blacks," surveyed 3,000 Black households in cities, suburbs and rural
localities across the nation. Among the findings:
---70 percent of all unemployed Blacks never receive any jobless benefits.
---56 percent of Black households with incomes below $6,000 a year do
not receive general assistance or aid to families with dependent
children.
---51 percent of all Black household heads on welfare say they are
covered by Medicaid.
---65 percent of all Black households receive benefits from only one or
18 none of the seven major income programs for the poor.

TIPS ON HOW TO AVOID CANCER
Worried about cancer and wondering what you can do to avoid it? Dr.
Michael B. Shimkin, former cancer researcher at the National Cancer Institute,
and now at the University of California at San Diego offers the
following advice: '
1. Do n~t smoke tobacco or substitutes. Cigarette smoking may be responsible
for as much as 50 percent of the cancer in males according
to some experts, and a smaller, but significant perc;ntage in
women. Smoking marijuana may also cause cancer.
2. Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol in excess is believed to promote
tumor formation.
3. Eat sparingly a "prudent" diet. Too great a calorie intake and
an excessive fat consumption have been associated with higher
incidence of some cancers.
4. Avoid unnecessary X-rays. Shimkin emphasized the word "unnecessary.''
5. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Sun bathing has been linked to an
increased rate of skin cancer.
6. A void inappropriate drug intake. Some medications are suspected
of being carcinogenic.
7. In the work place, avoid or minimize contact with irritants.
8. At work, avoid or minimize swallowing foreign substances.
9. A void or minimize breathing foreign materials.
IO. Use appropriate protective measures and devices while working.

SALUTE FOR COURAGE-Marquis Henderson of Compton (L) and
Frank Johnson, Jr. (R) of Los Angeles, were recently honored at a luncheon
for their heroic rescue of Robert Sneary (C) of Riverside, from his
overturned vehicle just before it became engulfed in flames.
Sneary, a gasoline transport driver for Exxon, was involved in an accident
on the Golden State Freeway near the Pasadena Freeway. The
cargo of gasoline ignited when the truck overturned, and Sneary was not
able to get out of the vehicle. Johnson and Henderson were traveling in
the opposite lanes of the freeway from the accident. After stopping, due
to the flames blocking their way, they noticed Sneary trying to get out of
his truck. Both men jumped the center-divider fence, climbed on top of
the overturned truck and opened the door in order for Sneary to climb
from the cab.
Stuart Pearman, Exxon Region Manager from Dallas, Texas, presented
each man with a check and a plaque for their act of bravery at a luncheon
24 at the University Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

ALL-BLACK CALIFORNIA SETTLEffiENT
CELEBRATES FOURTH ANNIVERSARY
The state Dept. of Parks and
Recreation sponsored the fourth
anniversary of the dedication of
the Colonel Allensworth State
Historic Park recently in the park
in southwestern Tulare County.
The celebration included talks
on the history of Allensworth, introduction
of Allensworth
pioneers, music and other entertainment.
Allensworth was founded in
1908 as an all-Black settlement by
Col. Allen Allensworth, who had
been the highest-ranking Black in
the Army, and by a retired Army
chaplain, William A. Payne.
The community prospered and
in 1914 became a judicial district
with the state's first Black justice
of the peace, William H. Dotson,
and first Black constable, Oscar
Overr.
However, Allensworth died in
1914. Later, the area suffered
from a lack of drinking and
irrigation water--despite a lengthy
r.ourt battle aimed at forcing the
developers to follow through on a
promise of sufficient irrigation
water--and most of the residents
moved to other parts of the state.
The state park has a visitor center
and a restoration is nearly
completed on the original
schoolhouse and the colonel's
home. Restoration of a drug store,
general store and post office are
scheduled to start soon.

STILL THE CHAMP-Mrs. Larry Holmes (C) smiles at an after-fight
celebration in Las Vegas, as she is positioned on the left by her famous
husband and on the right by the Holmes/ Ali promoter, Don King.
Holmes scored a record-setting eight straight knockouts when Ali failed
34 to answer the bell for the eleventh round.

ALI: ffiORE
THAN ABOXER
When historians write about Muhammad Ali, they will write that he
was one of the best heavyweight boxing champions of all times. He will
be ranked in the company of Jack Johnson, Joe Lewis, Rocky Marciano,
Jack Dempsey and other great heavyweights.
But more important to Black people, what made Muhammad Ali
perhaps the most widely known man in the world was what he did outside
the ring.
Ali was the first Black athlete to fight the white man's system head-on
and make it stick when he refused on his Islamic religious belief to be
drafted into the army and later won a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court
victory. His refusal to fight in the Vietnam war cost him his title and untold
millions, but it made him a hero beyond athletics to dark-skinned
people around the world.
Historians, who write the truth, will respect how Muhammad Ali
stood up for Black peoples' rights, how he stood by his religious beliefs
and how he was revered for his generosity and kindness in the Far East
Africa, and other places where skins are not white. They will also writ~
that Muhammad Ali, by example, persuaded generations of Black and
White youths that clean living is the best way of life.
EDUCATION THROUGH SPORTS
b,Y Bobb,Y fficDonold
Armed with a tax exemption
status; a theme "Education
through Sports," Twelve Com
mandments, and the Community
of Watts, Joe Clarke set out in
1970 to help ballplayers "utilize
their tools" (basketball talent) to
get an education.
The Watts Magicians were
formed in 1970 with the purpose of
giving young men a worthwhile
experience-an opportunity to
improve their talents, increase
their educational skills, plus
provide an exposure to college
basketball coaches which would
enable them to get a college
education.
Education through sports is Joe
Clarke's theme and the twelve
commandments is his game plan.
The commandments are patience,
competitiveness, discipline, basics,
awareness, responsibility, consistency,
control, concentration, fundamentals
and communications.
"What we try to impress on our
kids is that basketball is only a
means to an end-and that the end
is life itself. We ask them
(Magician players) to study at
least an hour a day, Monday
through Thursday; we ask them to
be in bed by 10 o'clock; we ask
them to be up by 6 a.m. to do
some exercises to get the body
stimulated so they don't sleep in
class."
A few of the success stories of
the Watts Magicians are NBA
players Robert Smith (Univ.
Nevada Las Vegas and New Jersey
Nets), David Greenwood (UCLA
and Chicago Bulls), Roy
Hamilton (UCLA and Detroit
Pistons), James Hardy (USF and
Utah Jazz) and Reggie Theus
(Univ. Nevada and Chicago
Bulls). Not to mention 75 to 80
former Magicians that are still
playing major college basketball.
Clarke has three sons, holds
down a full time job at Intercraft
Industries, is a member of the
Soulville Foundation, can be
found at most basketball games
from high school to pro's, and has
kept this routine for 10 years. In
fact, he probably should add a
new commandment-sacrifice. He
has that one down pat.
Joe Clarke helps the youth of
today get what's coming to them
in a positive way through
education and sports. 37

Norm Nixon, 25, is the
playmaking guard of the 1980
NBA World Champion Los
Angeles Lakers.
A mathematics major at Duquesne
University in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, Norman has also attended
real estate school since
moving to Los Angeles. His expertise
in both fields paid off recently
as he acquired an exceptionally
nice piece of property in the
View Park section of Los Angeles.
"Because I went through
something like mathematics which
is an extremely difficult major,
and being aggressive, I'm able to
handle all my own business .... I'm
doing some things now that will
put me in a position where
working for somebody else might
not be mandatory," Norman explains
his post basketball career
plans.
In addition to making real
estate investments, the Laker star
branched into the media this
summer with his "Norm Nixon
Sports Show," a five-minute interview
and information program
on the popular KDAY radio
station. Some of his guests included
Reggie Jackson, Don
Baylor, and Lake Coach Paul
Westhead.
Norman, a 1980 recipient of the
Youth Achievers Award, has conducted
summer basketball day
camps for boys at Beverly Hills
High School and in Santa Maria,
California.
Despite all this activity, for
Norm Nixon basketball is still the
top priority. His performance in
exhibition games prior to the
1980-81 NBA season convinced
fans that as one of the main
pistons in the Lakers' fast-break
machine. He has recovered fully
from the operation he underwent
during the off-season to repair
torn ligaments in the finger of his
left hand which he sustained in the
final game of the championship
series against Philadelphia.
As optimistic about the Lakers'
chance to repeat their championship
as he was about the
rehabilitation of his left hand,
Norm Nixon says confidently; "If
we can go and play like we did this
year. ...and if we stay injury free,
we'll be back in the running.... I
think if we play like we played
(last season), nobody will beat us
again!" 39
LA TOYA JACKSON...
'ON ffiYOWN'
by Potricio Bornes
Twenty-four year old La Toya Jackson is
the fifth born to the family of the multitalented
musical geniuses we first knew as
the " Jackson Five."Although her brothers
have given us more than two decades of
explosive sounds, the attractive Gemini
tells us that it wasn't until five years ago
that she was, so to speak, " bitten by the
show business bug." Just recently,
La Toya recorded her first album--entitled
simply "La Toya Jackson." It is produced
by her brother, Michael Jackson. Here,
La Toya discusses freely with "Grapevine"
staff her career ambitions and shares with
its readers her bitter-sweet struggle for
self-recognition.
"What I really want," says
LaToya, "is for people to accept
me and my music because they like
it and not because I'm a
Jackson."
Naturally gentle in tone and
mannerism, LaToya speaks softly
but very affixed. "When we cut
the album, I didn't want to call it
LaToya Jackson, I just wanted to
call it LaToya. I needed the
security," she adds, "of knowing
I could do this on my own....if I
fail let it be because LaToya failed
and if I succeed, let it be on my
ability."
Since release of her debut
album, the brown-eyed beauty is a
bit more relaxed. Her current hit
singles "If You Feel the Funk,"
and "Night Time Lover" are
moving up rapidly on the charts
and LaToya feels that it is
definitely her inner soul that
people are adhering to.
Highly attractive with soft
angelic features, it's hard to
believe that no one gentleman has
yet captured her heart.
"But if there were a special
guy," La Toya affirms, "he would
have to be someone that I can gain
from mentally.'' She further tells
us, "I'm hungry for knowledge ...
there is so much to be learned, I
like someone that inspires me and
who I can inspire in return."
LaToya's thirst for knowledge
allows for more of her personality
to surface. She has total confidence
in herself and her abilities.
Her ultimate, she concedes, is to
become a screen actress.
But viewing the lovely enchantress
on the big screen may not be
in the immediate future. For the
moment, she's absorbed in the
thought of making her album a
success. As with all recording artists,
LaToya dreams of her first
gold album.
She remains positive that this
will happen. Extensive preparation,
includiPg promotional tours
and several television appearances,
are all designed to give her an
added boost. She has already appeared
on major telecasts including
"Soul Train," "Solid Gold,"
"Midnight Special" and "American
Bandstand.''
There are already plans for her 41
~a Toya at a party celebrating her new album release at the Candy Store
m Hollywood. (L to R) Family members Tito, Jackie, Grandmother Jackson,
La Toya, father Joe Jackson, Janet, Marlon and Randy.

second album. She reveals to us "l
think this time l'11 do it without
any help from the Jacksons. lt was
sort of hard the first time," she
explains, "because Michael and l
wrote "Night Time Lover" together.
They would always say .. .'by
LaToya Jackson, produced by Michael
Jackson' and people would
immediately link the two."
LaToya is proud of her family
and loves being a Jackson; but to
have her own claim to fame is
most important to her. She knows
that in the beginning it may be difficult
but she's confident that she
will triumph. Her music is
exhiliarating and the response the
singer feels is real.
LaToya is a sensational star on
her way, most definitely On Her
Own.

"Love Lives Forever," an
album by the late Minnie Riperton,
was completed this summer.
It's unique because the process
used had never been tried before.
It was produced by Dick Rudolph,
her husband, who's an accomplished
musician and songwriter
with an old friend, Johnny Pate'.
who also has been in music many
years.
"The songs had been recorded
previously by Minnie, and she
wanted to re-do them a certain
way to be included on her new
albums," Rudolph states. "We
saw there wasn't going to be time
to recut them so Minnie and I
talked about what we wanted to
do. We knew we were definitely
going to do it. Capitol wanted this

DONNA
WASHINGTON
Raised on gospel, rooted in soul
and very much a daughter of contemporary
popular music, Do~na
Washington makes her record1_ng
debut on Capitol Records with
"For the Sake of Love." With a
sophistication that belies her 21
years, the graceful vocalist proves
herself equally adept at ballads
and highly flavored tunes.
Produced by Capitol's Cecil Hale
and Don Daniels, the selections on
the LP range from Lamont
Dozier' s "Coming in for a Landing"
to Peter Cetera's "If You
Leave Me Now" to Donna's
favorite, the title track writt_en by
Daniels and pianist John Spnnger.
It' s a remarkable debut album
from a remarkable new talent and
all-American woman . w~o~e
passionate involve~ent with hfe is
reflected in her music.
Anyone familiar with
Sylvester's electrifying live or
recorded performances already
knows that a great deal of the wattage
is supplied by his amazing
backup singers, the Two Tons O'
Fun. The Tons--Martha Wash and
Izora Rhodes Armstead--are now
center stage on their brand new
Fantasy / Honey release entitled
" Two Tons O' Fun."
Among the album's many
highlights: "Just Us" and "Earth
Can Be Just Like Heaven," both
co-written by Eric Robinson
(composer of "Dance Disco
Heat"). lzora steps out on the uptempo
"I Got the Feeling," and
"Taking Away Your Space,"
Martha Wash and lzora Armstead
TWO TONS O' FUN
written by Harvey Fuqua and
Sylvester, is a ballad spotlight for
Martha.
It doesn' t take a lot of musical
expertise to figure out that Martha
and lzora have strong gospel
roots. "Our parents are church
people," Izora explains, "so
that's all we've known in our
lives." Both Tons, however, have
also had training in opera and the
classics.
Ms. Wash was born and raised
in San Francisco, the youngest of
nine children. Ms. Armstead,
originally from Galveston, Texas,
has lived in San Francisco since
she was a small child.
JOHNNY "GUITAR" WATSONAPERSISTENT
ffiUSICIAN
by Po.uline Powell
"Love Jones was done intentionally
to reach all audiences that
could play it seven days a week,"
he comments. It was a lazy afternoon
in the comfortable home of
Johnny "Guitar" Watson,
located in a cul-de-sac. His latest
album which has variety has been
climbing the charts around the
country.
The two selections getting the
most attention are a duet done
with Randy Redman and a
comical rap about the telephone
bill. Also included are a spiritual
and country/western with R&B
flavor. All of the selections were
written, arranged, produced and
played by Johnny except the
drums.
His live performances this year
have included the United States,
Europe and the Sidewalk Festival
in Houston, Texas. Having a
family history of closeness,
qualified family members along
with his twelve piece band work
and travel with him.
"My music didn't hit big until I
included my mother," he says.
His mother's picture is on the
cover and voice on the title track
of the album, "A Real Mother for
You." This album and the "Ain't
That a Bitch" album went gold
June 2, l 977. It was the first time
in music history a recording artist
48 had two albums go gold on the
same day. Johnny's present
album, "Booty Ooty" has gone
gold in France. .
The same company who mtroduced
the Beatles and Elton
John, DJM (Dick James Music)
signed Johnny "Guitar" after an
in troduction from a mutual
friend. There hadn' t been any
faith or support shown from other
companies of his abilities.
However, in 1975 his recording
of "Lone Ranger" was a hit which
he attributes to his appearance at
the Sidewalk Festival in Houston.
Other hits in the earlier years include
"There's Been Some Lonely
Lonely Nights" and "Cutting In
On You."
For many years, he made a
living as a showman traveling the
"Chittin Circuit. ... Maybe it's better;
I wasn't a success earlier
because I'd probably be an Oldie
but Goodie--instead I'm current."
Johnny's musical career started
when he won a talent contest in
1954. The prize was a recording
contract with King Records and
he performed Blues at that time.
He has worked with many greats
throughout the years including
B. B. King and Little Richard.
When asked about the
" Guitar" in his name, he explained
when he started singers
always added a handle so he
became Johnny "Guitar" Watson.
Writing at least three songs a
week that relate to everyday life,
teaching himself how to play the
drum are only two examples of his
devotion to music. Another
example is his bedroom which
converts into a music studio at any
given moment.
Johnny feels that only 40 per
cent of his ability has been tapped
and he plans on playing jazz
someday. His other plans and
goals include having a benefit for
children, helping less fortunate
people, and opening up a music
school.
In the future, he plans to start a
record company and his first artist
would be Randy Redman who
sings with him on his present
album. By the virtue of his tenure
in music, Johnny "Guitar" Watson
is definitely a persistent
musician.

NEW CHRISTIAN GAffiE
DEVISED FOR FAffill Y
Barbara A. Smith, a born again

Christian family game called The
Game of Revelations. She is a

Public Social Services.
Mrs. Smith, the mother of three
sons, states "The Game of
Revelations is an entertaining,
historical, educational and
evangelistic family board game for
two to four players, ages seven to

of Monopoly.
The object of the game is to go
to Heaven instead of Eternal
Judgment. Players in the game
choose markers of people of
biblical times and receive Blessings
and Curses (in the form of money)
throughout the game. Moves are
determined by spinning the Faith
Wheel. The Heaven or Eternal
Judgment Wheel determines the
destiny of the players after the
players reach the Judgment Day
The game takes approximately

Let us pray that strength and courage
abundant be given to all who work for a
world of reason and understanding * that
the good that lies in every man's heart
may day by day be magnified * that men
will come to see more clearly not tbat
which divides them, but that which unites
them * that each hour may bring us closer
to a final victory, not of nation over
nation, but of man over his own evils and
weaknesses * that the true spirit of this
Christmas Season -its joy, its beauty, its
hope, and above all its abiding faith may
live among us * that the blessings of
peace be ours -the peace to build and
grow, to live in harmony
and sympathy with others,
and to plan for the future
with confidence.

DYffiALLy WINS POLITICAL comEBACK
Mervyn Dymally, former
Lieutenant Governor of California,
won a major political
comeback recently when he was
elected to the U.S. House of
Representatives by voters in the
31st District of Los Angeles.
His election victory is gratifying
to millions of Black people
throughout California and the
country who believe that he had
been black-balled when he lost his
re-election bid for the Lt. Governor's
office.
Dymally gained his victory by
capturing a large block of
minority voters in the multi-racial
31st District, which covers a band
of cities from Torrance on the
west to Paramount on the east and
includes Hawthorne, Compton,
Gardena, Lawndale and parts of
Los Angeles and other comm
unities.
Dymally was a teacher of exceptional
children in Los Angeles for
six years before election to the
State Assembly in 1962, and his
constant stream of bills to aid the
state's children and youth showed
that this remained one of his
major concerns during 12 years as
a legislator. He was elected to the
State Senate in 1966, and served as
Chairman of the Democratic
Caucus.
He successfully authored major
legislation to expand the state's
child, youth and adoption services,
speed educational reform,
56 strengthen campaign contribution
regulations, provide more child
care centers and greatly expand
women's rights. He consistently
won ratings as a top legislator by
consumer, environmental, labor,
women's and civil rights groups.
He authored the Equal Rights
Amendment and the 18-Year-Old
Vote Resolution in the legislature.
He has studied at Oxford, and
has his Ph.D. He holds a B.A. in
education from California State
University, Los Angeles, and an
M.A. m government from
California State University,
Sacramento. He serves on the
Board of Directors of Lincoln
Law University, and the University
of West Los Angeles. He was
the original organizer of the
National Conference of Black
Elected Officials.
