Young Black Swimmer Regarded As Best
In the Valley
Little Tony Smith, 9, of the Fresno
Swim Club pops his head out
of the water during a swim workout.
The nine-year-old Black swimmer
is regarded as one of the best
in the valley for his age group.
Tony is a fourth grader at Madison
Elementary School. He is the
son of Dr. and Mrs. Noel Smith .
Recently, Tony captured fou r
prizes in the Visalia Sunkist Invi tational
Swim Meet. He set a meet
record of 18.4 in the 25-yard
breaststroke and tied the 14.2
standard in the 25-yard free style.
He also placed first in the 25 butterfly
(16.4) and third in the 25
backstroke (19.4) to win the high
point trophy.
Tony 's mother, Mrs. Gloria
Smith, said, "When we were building
our home we wanted a pool
and we felt all the kids (6 boys
and 3 girls) would have to lea rn
how to swim. So, when he first
started swimming, it was for safety
reasons.''
"We would kind of like to see
more Blacks go into swimming. In
the past there has not been the
encouragement for Blacks to go into
swimming. There have been no
individuals in our area who ha ve
been stars in swimming."
"Blacks just aren 't exposed to
swimming because they just swim
in the swimming pools. But, unless
you join a team and really d e velop,
you never think about swimming
seriously."
Mrs. Smith explained that fin ancial
reasons limit Blacks from participating
and did not go alo ng
with the theory that Black bone
structure hinders the ability.
Regardless of theories young
Tony's attention appears di rected
toward winning awards, not color
barriers.

WEDDING
OF THE
MONTH
What may well be the most spectacular wedding of this or any other
season took place last month in Town and Gown Hall at the University
of Southern California when Fresno's Charles Young, who has just signed
a $140,000 contract with the Philadelphia Eagles pro football club,
and former Fresnan Colleen Walker, said vows before some 500 guests.
The Young-Walker nuptial was only the third wedding ever to be
allowed in the USC hall usually reserved for special university receptions
of dignitaries.
As the bride started down an improvised aisle lined with tall topiary
trees of gardenias, yellow carnations and ivy, the stage curtains were
pulled to reveal a flower-bedecked gazebo outlined with twinkling
lights. The bride's gown-custom-made by a Hollywood designer-had
miniature twinkling lights outlining its 20-foot train.
At the champagne reception and dance that followed, a six-tiered
cake (5 feet wide at the base) was cut by the couple who stood on a
platform to reach it. Even then , the cake towered over Charles who is
6-foot-5.
Among those attending frcm Fresno were Charles' parents, Amos and
Nora Young, and his br.:, thers-Amos Jr., Lawrence, Calvin and sister
Joyce, who was a candle-lighter. The Ralph Walker Jrs., Colleen's brother
and sister-in-law, Mr. a nd Mrs. Richard Gwin and daughter Lorrie,
the bride's sister and br: ther-in-law and niece who was flower girl, also
were there. Others driving to the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Pete
Mehas, the Jim Fugmans, the Larry Ravens, and the Elmo Bradleys.
The bride's parents; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Walker Sr. moved from here
three years ago and now live in Milpitas, Calif. (Fresno Bee)

BLACK HISTORY
CREATIVE HAIR
By Makada
The art of hair sculpturing originated
in Africa more than l 0,000
years ago. Beautiful pictures of
Egyptians wearing braids are still
found inside the great pyramids.
The Egyptians or Romiti, as the
Black people of the Nile referred
to themselves, wore braids as a
spiritual tradition. They believed
the world was created by fire
which lead to the worship of the
sun. The Egyptians believed the
Sun God, RA, would aid them in
the development of their brain and
their soul, thus, they braided their 1
hair to allow as much solar energy
as possible to be absorbed by the
brain.
Whenever the Egyptians sculptured
their hair, they first made
certain it was clean. The braider
then created a design by feeling
the vibration of the individual having
his hair braided. Instead of
thinking up a hair design, they
created designs according to the
individuals good vibrations. So the
braided seldomly know what the
design would be like before it was
completed. The braids performed
triple duty, l) they beautified the
skull which houses the brain; 2)
they enabled the wearer to think
more clearly by lowering the electro-
interference between the electricity
in the atmosphere and the
electricity in the hair; and 3) they
grew the hair, changed the rough
texture, and brought out richer coloration.

NEW BLACK DISC JOCKEY
By Harold K. Sutton
Today there's a new sound on the air and if your radio dial is turned
to KLIP, you'll know that something vocally different is going on in the
broadcasting world.
For many people to become a disc jockey is only a dream but for the
latest disc jockey around the Fresno area, that dream has come true.
It has come true through assistance from the Fresno Model Cities sponsored
training program at the Vanguard School of Broadcasting.
Pictured above is their latest training success, in the person of Jeffrey
V. Sutton, better known on the air as "Jeffrey Von." He is the latest addition
to the KLIP staff and has been a Fresno resident for the past
seventeen years. He is replacing Harry Jeffrey, who left KLIP to accept
a position with KSOL radio in the Bay area.
Jeffrey Von is a 1969 graduate of Edison High School. He also attended
Fresno State University, majoring in drama, radio, and television.
For the past two and a half years Jeffrey Von has been a disc jockey

many dances in the same area. He later returned to Fresno and began
working for KOAD in Lemoore before moving to KLIP in Fowler, Calif.

blowing all the latest hits to you, so keep your dial tuned to KLIP

Young Black Swimmer Regarded As Best
In the Valley
Little Tony Smith, 9, of the Fresno
Swim Club pops his head out
of the water during a swim workout.
The nine-year-old Black swimmer
is regarded as one of the best
in the valley for his age group.
Tony is a fourth grader at Madison
Elementary School. He is the
son of Dr. and Mrs. Noel Smith .
Recently, Tony captured fou r
prizes in the Visalia Sunkist Invi tational
Swim Meet. He set a meet
record of 18.4 in the 25-yard
breaststroke and tied the 14.2
standard in the 25-yard free style.
He also placed first in the 25 butterfly
(16.4) and third in the 25
backstroke (19.4) to win the high
point trophy.
Tony 's mother, Mrs. Gloria
Smith, said, "When we were building
our home we wanted a pool
and we felt all the kids (6 boys
and 3 girls) would have to lea rn
how to swim. So, when he first
started swimming, it was for safety
reasons.''
"We would kind of like to see
more Blacks go into swimming. In
the past there has not been the
encouragement for Blacks to go into
swimming. There have been no
individuals in our area who ha ve
been stars in swimming."
"Blacks just aren 't exposed to
swimming because they just swim
in the swimming pools. But, unless
you join a team and really d e velop,
you never think about swimming
seriously."
Mrs. Smith explained that fin ancial
reasons limit Blacks from participating
and did not go alo ng
with the theory that Black bone
structure hinders the ability.
Regardless of theories young
Tony's attention appears di rected
toward winning awards, not color
barriers.

WEDDING
OF THE
MONTH
What may well be the most spectacular wedding of this or any other
season took place last month in Town and Gown Hall at the University
of Southern California when Fresno's Charles Young, who has just signed
a $140,000 contract with the Philadelphia Eagles pro football club,
and former Fresnan Colleen Walker, said vows before some 500 guests.
The Young-Walker nuptial was only the third wedding ever to be
allowed in the USC hall usually reserved for special university receptions
of dignitaries.
As the bride started down an improvised aisle lined with tall topiary
trees of gardenias, yellow carnations and ivy, the stage curtains were
pulled to reveal a flower-bedecked gazebo outlined with twinkling
lights. The bride's gown-custom-made by a Hollywood designer-had
miniature twinkling lights outlining its 20-foot train.
At the champagne reception and dance that followed, a six-tiered
cake (5 feet wide at the base) was cut by the couple who stood on a
platform to reach it. Even then , the cake towered over Charles who is
6-foot-5.
Among those attending frcm Fresno were Charles' parents, Amos and
Nora Young, and his br.:, thers-Amos Jr., Lawrence, Calvin and sister
Joyce, who was a candle-lighter. The Ralph Walker Jrs., Colleen's brother
and sister-in-law, Mr. a nd Mrs. Richard Gwin and daughter Lorrie,
the bride's sister and br: ther-in-law and niece who was flower girl, also
were there. Others driving to the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Pete
Mehas, the Jim Fugmans, the Larry Ravens, and the Elmo Bradleys.
The bride's parents; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Walker Sr. moved from here
three years ago and now live in Milpitas, Calif. (Fresno Bee)

BLACK HISTORY
CREATIVE HAIR
By Makada
The art of hair sculpturing originated
in Africa more than l 0,000
years ago. Beautiful pictures of
Egyptians wearing braids are still
found inside the great pyramids.
The Egyptians or Romiti, as the
Black people of the Nile referred
to themselves, wore braids as a
spiritual tradition. They believed
the world was created by fire
which lead to the worship of the
sun. The Egyptians believed the
Sun God, RA, would aid them in
the development of their brain and
their soul, thus, they braided their 1
hair to allow as much solar energy
as possible to be absorbed by the
brain.
Whenever the Egyptians sculptured
their hair, they first made
certain it was clean. The braider
then created a design by feeling
the vibration of the individual having
his hair braided. Instead of
thinking up a hair design, they
created designs according to the
individuals good vibrations. So the
braided seldomly know what the
design would be like before it was
completed. The braids performed
triple duty, l) they beautified the
skull which houses the brain; 2)
they enabled the wearer to think
more clearly by lowering the electro-
interference between the electricity
in the atmosphere and the
electricity in the hair; and 3) they
grew the hair, changed the rough
texture, and brought out richer coloration.

NEW BLACK DISC JOCKEY
By Harold K. Sutton
Today there's a new sound on the air and if your radio dial is turned
to KLIP, you'll know that something vocally different is going on in the
broadcasting world.
For many people to become a disc jockey is only a dream but for the
latest disc jockey around the Fresno area, that dream has come true.
It has come true through assistance from the Fresno Model Cities sponsored
training program at the Vanguard School of Broadcasting.
Pictured above is their latest training success, in the person of Jeffrey
V. Sutton, better known on the air as "Jeffrey Von." He is the latest addition
to the KLIP staff and has been a Fresno resident for the past
seventeen years. He is replacing Harry Jeffrey, who left KLIP to accept
a position with KSOL radio in the Bay area.
Jeffrey Von is a 1969 graduate of Edison High School. He also attended
Fresno State University, majoring in drama, radio, and television.
For the past two and a half years Jeffrey Von has been a disc jockey

many dances in the same area. He later returned to Fresno and began
working for KOAD in Lemoore before moving to KLIP in Fowler, Calif.
