Fresno's
Most
Influential
BLACK PEOPLE

The men and women shown on the following pages were selected by
the GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE staff as "Fresno's Most Influential Black
People".
The criteria for selection was based on whether an individual had
influence - for better or worse - on the lives, thinking, and actions
of a large segment of Fresno's Black population. Selection was also
based on whether an individual commanded widespread local influence
among Blacks, and/or has unusual influence with those white people
whose policies and practices significantly affect a large number of Black
people.
Included in "Fresno's Most Influential . . ." are persons of various
occupations, ages, abilities, income, education, temperaments, and points
of view. Some are considered as "militants" others are thought to be
ultra-conservatives. Several are even described by many as "out of it".
But despite these dissimilarities, all meet our criteria.
The staff realizes that after readers look over our selection some will
say "How did so and so get in there?" or " Why isn't so-and-so in
there?" Yes, we may have inadvertently missed some people, but next
year we will try to do better.

YOU TELL ON YOURSELF

You tell on yourself by the friends you seek,
By the very manner in w hich you speak.

By !he way you employ your leisure lime,
By the use you make of dollar and dime.

You tell what you are by the things you w ear,
By !he spirit in which your burdens bear.

By the kind of things at which you laugh,
By the records you play on the phonograph.

You tell what you are by the way you walk,
By the things of which you delight to talk.

By the manner in w hich you bear defeat,
By so simple a thing as how you eat.

By the books you choose from the well-filled shelf,
In these w ays and more, you tell on yourself.
