FRESNO'S
BEST
DRESSED
WOMEN

The lovely ladies who are featured in this month's Best Dressed
Women's event were selected from a list of over 150 names
submitted by individuals and organizations to the Grapevine
Selection Committee. The positive response by you, our readers,
who sponsored women, was most inspiring and we, the staff,
thank you for participating. We also ask you to be a sponsor
again next year.

We also thank the ladies who were selected for participating
and we feel that the selection committee made some excellent
choices. Since so many of the women sponsored were known to
be exceptional dressers, the selection committee spent many
hours deliberating on whom to select. To help break some of
the ties, the committee decided to give some additional consideration
to those women who were sponsored by more than one
individual or organization. Curiously enough one of the women
selected had over 160 individuals and organizations sponsoring
her.

To give our readers a sneak preview of what's to come in the
future the Grapevine will feature a special Who's Who edition.
It will feature prominent Black men and women of Fresno in
their various fields and professions. Also a future edition will
feature Fresno's Most Eligible Black Bachelors.

IF HE CAME TO YOUR HOUSE

When you saw Him coming, would you meet Him at
the door
With arms outstretched in welcome to your heavenly
Visitor?
Or would you have to change your clothes before
you let Him in?
Or hide some magazines and put the Bible where
they'd been?
Would you hide your worldly music and put some
hymnbooks out?
Could you let Jesus walk right in or would you
rush about?
And I wonder-if the Saviour spent a day or two
with you,
Would you go right on doing the things you
always do?
Would you go right on saying the things you
always say?
Would life for you continue as it does from day
today?
Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you'd
planned to go?
Or would you maybe change your plans for just
a day or so?
Would you be glad to have Him meet your very
closest friends?
Or would you hope they stay away until His visit ends?
Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on
and on?
Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last
was gone?
It might be interesting to know the things that you
would do,
If Jesus came in person to spend some time with you.

In Memory of...

Happy Harold

The beginning of 1he Blues in the San Joaquin Valley has reached
the end of its musical scale. Happy Harold, the guy who started
it all, 'way back in 1950 has passed. And with his death, one of
the most interesting eras of music has become history.

His name was as familiar on Fresno's West Side as that of the
President of the United States. In some cases, maybe, even more so.
His gravel like voice, was his identificaticn marker, for once you
had heard his familiar chatter, you could never mistake it for any
announcer here, or anywhere else. This was Happy Harold, the
man who was responsible for the Blues, coming, when it did, to
the San Joaquin Valley.

It all began as a lark, when the owner of KGST Radio put him
in the studio to fill time one Saturday afternoon. He started with
Wayne King but soon discovered that the way to go was with Little
Richard and Amos Milburn, Earl Bostic and the rest. It caught on
fast. He soc n became the most listened to disc jockey on Sunday
afternoon, and remember, this, way back in the fifthies when
things were different.

James Brown, in his wire to the family said, " I can remember as
if it were yesterday, I couldn't get a record played in the city only
because I had a certain type of music and represented the Ghetto.
This man was responsible for James Brown and his music being
heard in Fresno, California." James said many more beautiful
things in this telegram that ended with, " I know you have gone
where all good people go. I'll try to be half as good as you were,
Dear Brother. Rest in peace. You've paid your debt to society."

Happy loved to help the struggling, young musician and did
just that with countless numbers of artists, snubbed by the big name
d.j.'s. And when he picked a record to be a smash, it usually hit
the charts.

His dime a request program for the March of Dimes collected
more money than many of the cities· entire campaign in Fresno
County. He was forever helping clubs and organizations in fund
raising drives. And when he asked for calls on the air, the telephone
company would let KLIP know that their lines were all tied up in
this area.

When he started with KLIP Radio in 1962, he opened an entire
new musical world to folks who had never heard him before. To
many he was the big man with the gravel voice. To others a hope
that through music the world might be a better place for co-existence.
But to most of us, he was the man from the House of Blues.
The House that Happy built.

Grapevine OCTOBER 1970

44

His theme was Harlem Nocturne. A sad and mournful sax theme
made famous by Stan the Man Taylor. It was laid to rest, with
Happy on the sad and mournful day of September 8, 1970.
"Dear Brother, rest in peace. You've paid your debt to society."

It's ourselves we have to dig

And yet there are some blacks who

Sure, I wear my hair woolly and to
