NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Frank Johnson
This month's issue of the Grapevine
is featuring a special section
on "People In The News -1969".
We have attempted to give a pictorial
review of some of the people
who have appeared in local news
this year. Because of the length
of this section, many of our regular
topics will not appear this
month, but they will be continued
in our next issue.
Next month the Grapevine will
feature several special articles on
topics and issues that will concern
Black people. These articles will
be written by professional and laymen
who wish to better the Black
community.

SPEAKING OF EDUCATION . . .
Professor Alexander Lark
For years, reading, writing, and arithmetic have been the basis for
the term "a good education." Are these enough for 1970? If our schools
offer more than these three subjects, are you aware of the new courses?
What are they? Are your children getting the benefits from the methods
of teaching and learning that the schools now offer? If not, why not?
If you did not make a New Year's resolution, may I suggest that you
act on one anyway:
Resolve to know! Know the personnel and the program at
the school nearest you and be sure that those administrators
and teachers know you. Resolve to become an active part of
that school and its program. Resolve that you will not go
through 1970 not knowing about schools and the problems
which arise due to the action or lack of action by you or by
the school's program.
SPECIAL NOTE
Professor Lark is an instructor in the Education Department at Fresno
State College. In addition to his regular classes he teaches advanced
workshops for teachers who teach in areas that are labeled culturally
deprived.
Lark will periodically write articles for the Grapevine. If you have any
questions that you would like his opinions on, address your letters to
Grapevine Magazine, lO12 S. Trinity, Fresno, Calif. 93706.

BLACK POETESS VISITS FRESNO
Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni who is well
known for her poetry, visited Fresno
recently. She teaches at Ruth ledge
University in New York and
lectures extensively throughout the
United States.
Miss Giovanni, 26, works have
appeared in many national publications
including Negro Digest,
Journal of Black Poetry, Black Arts
and Mohammad Speaks. Her poem
"Nikki and Rosa" is taken from her
book of poems titled Black Judgment.
NIKKI-ROSA
childhood rememberances are always a drag
if you're Black
you always remember things like living in Woodlawn
with no inside toilet
and if you become famous or something
they never talk about how happy you were to have your mother
all to yourself and
how good the water felt when you got your bath from one of those
big tubs that folk in chicago barbecue in
and somehow when you talk about home
it never gets across how much you
understood their feelings
as the whole family attended meetings about Hollydale
and even though you remember
your biographers never understand
your father's pain as he sells his stock
and another dream goes
and though you're poor it isn't poverty that
concerns you
and though they fought a lot
it isn't your father's drinking that makes any difference
but only that everybody is together and you
and your sister have happy birthdays and very good christmasses
and I really hope no white person ever has cause to write about me
because they never understand Black love is Black wealth and they'll
probably talk about my hard childhood and never under tand that
all the while I was quite happy

"Nikki and Rosa" is taken from her
book of poems titled Black Judgment.
NIKKI-ROSA
childhood rememberances are always a drag
if you're Black
you always remember things like living in Woodlawn
with no inside toilet
and if you become famous or something
they never talk about how happy you were to have your mother
all to yourself and
how good the water felt when you got your bath from one of those
big tubs that folk in chicago barbecue in
and somehow when you talk about home
it never gets across how much you
understood their feelings
as the whole family attended meetings about Hollydale
and even though you remember
your biographers never understand
your father's pain as he sells his stock
and another dream goes
and though you're poor it isn't poverty that
concerns you
and though they fought a lot
it isn't your father's drinking that makes any difference
but only that everybody is together and you
and your sister have happy birthdays and very good christmasses
and I really hope no white person ever has cause to write about me
because they never understand Black love is Black wealth and they'll
probably talk about my hard childhood and never under tand that
all the while I was quite happy
